Approachable fine dining with a contemporary, seasonal American cuisine. This top-flight eatery tucked into an alley off Townsend is really three venues in one. Upstairs is the Dining Room, a sumptuous seating area where Executive Chef Matthew Dolan causes memorable dinners to appear before wide-eyed customers. His classical training with its French and Italian roots ensure impressively presented and perfectly prepared dishes to delight a wide variety of tastes. Downstairs is the Lounge, a more casual space featuring fare suitable for relaxed conviviality. Also downstairs is the Bar, where can be found unique concoctions like the SF Yacht Club 42 and the Dark and Stormy, both emblematic of a cocktail program featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients employed by a professional, approachable bar staff. The wine list runs to more than 400 selections, representing all the major wine-producing regions of the world. Wine Director Cesar Kusik trained under Larry Stone at Rubicon. Dolan and Kusik combine their talents to create a weekly tasting menu that is surprisingly well priced at $78 for an offering of seven courses, with pairings an additional $45. Our recommendations for dinner upstairs would start with Local Corn Ravioli, Raw Tuna made with ahi, or Seared Diver Scallop. Follow with Grilled Prawns, Chicken Fried Quail, or Whole Roasted Dorade. If you are entertaining a small army of friends, consider the Whole Roasted King Salmon or the Wagyu Cowboy Rib Eye: either will feed eight. When eating downstairs, try the house-signature Soft Pretzels. Also good are Tempura Prawn and Pork Belly Confit. Desserts, and their pairings, evolve with the seasons. Sunday brunch is from 11 to 2.
